Umno confident of RoS nod to amend party constitution

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno is confident the Registrar of Societies (RoS) will accept its decision to amend the party's constitution to allow internal polls to be held after the next general election.

Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said the party had also submitted additional documents as required by RoS.

This, he said, included supporting documents on the consensus reached during the party's extraordinary general meeting (EGM) in May.

"We are still waiting for a response from RoS. When I asked (RoS) if there are any other documents that they need, they said everything is complete.

"Therefore, we are waiting patiently for their decision," he said here today.

Ahmad Maslan believed that it was not difficult for RoS to come to a decision as it previously approved a similar request by MCA.

"If we look at MCA, the party had sought to make similar amendments, which were approved by RoS."

Umno, on May 15, approved amendments to the party's constitution to delay its polls until after the 15th General Election.

The consensus was reached unanimously by 2,586 Umno delegates from 192 divisions during the party's EGM.

Asked if the date of the party polls would only be decided pending RoS's decision, Ahmad Maslan replied in the affirmative.

"Whatever the decision is (in relation to the party polls) will also depend on the decision by RoS.

"We are hoping for a positive outcome from RoS on our request. Let us wait for their decision," he said.

On a separate matter, he said the Umno Supreme Council meeting tonight would also discuss woes affecting the people in relation to the rising cost of living.

"Tonight, we will raise several recommendations that can be considered for implementation by the government.

"I myself will raise the recommendations if no one does so at the meeting tonight," he said.
