Santhara's only quiting as Bersatu associate members wing head

KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Edmund Santhara Kumar is not quitting Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu).

Party information chief Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan said the Segamat member of parliament was only resigning as the head of Bersatu's associate members wing.

"I just spoke to Datuk Seri Dr Santhara. He explained that he had only wished to step down as head of the party's associate members wing

"That is the content of the letter (which Santhara had submitted to the party's leadership). Not to quit the party," Wan Saiful told Berita Harian today

He added he was confident that Bersatu top leadership would thoroughly consider Santhara's decision.

A source quoted by Free Malaysia Today had claimed that Santhara had submitted his resignation letter to Bersatu secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin last week.

The same source had claimed that Santhara had come to such a decision since the latter believed that there was no future for non-Bumiputera MPs in Bersatu.

As of today, Hamzah, who is the Home Minister, has yet to confirm whether Santhara had indeed resigned from the party or whether the latter only wished to relinquish his position as the head of Bersatu's associate members wing.

When speaking after attending an event in Perak today, Hamzah, who is the Larut MP, said that any decision made by Santhara would not weaken the party.

In August 2020, Santhara became the first non-Bumiputera MP to join Bersatu.

He was one of 10 MPs who followed in the footsteps of Datuk Seri Azmin Ali to quit PKR following the 'Sheraton Move' in the same year.
