Dr M: Bersatu will pay for 'Sheraton Move'

KUALA LUMPUR: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad says Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) is set to lose in the upcoming 15th General Election for its betrayal of the Pakatan Harapan government in February 2020.

He said losing would be fitting for the party because it came into power by "betraying a friend".

"The party came to power through the backdoor," he said referring to the Sheraton Move, which led to the fall of the Pakatan Harapan government in February 2020.

Dr Mahathir, who was a former Bersatu chairman prior to the party's exit from PH, said the party was power hungry.

"The party, namely the faction involved in the Sheraton Move, had little regard for the rakyat's welfare and were only interested in gaining power," he said, adding that it was the cause of the political instability experienced today.

He said the party no longer had the support of Umno and Pas in the upcoming general election.

He also condemned Umno for pushing for an early election despite the warnings about the monsoon season.

Dr Mahathir was hitting out at Bersatu's president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and the latter's political allies who had quietly orchestrated the Sheraton Move and put Dr Mahathir out of the premiership, which he held for the second time at the age of 95.
