Umno to Pas: Pick a side quick

KUALA LUMPUR: Pas needs to be quick in deciding whether it is to work with Umno or stick with Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia.

Umno secretary- general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said that this decision had to be made soon considering the growing speculation that Parliament will be dissolved soon.

He said Umno would wait for Pas to meet over the weekend, as it had two meetings scheduled to make the call and relay their decisions back to Umno.

"The deadline will be after these meetings. Regardless of when the election is called everything, has to be done fast," he said when met at Umno headquarters here today.

He said Barisan Nasional (BN) were particular on dates, without pinpointing a date on when exactly Pas's deadline would be.

On Oct 2, Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi issued an ultimatum to the party to pick a side but did not specify what the deadline would be.

Ahmad also downplayed the 'Top 5' meeting that took place this evening following Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob's audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

He said it was "just a regular meeting".

"I would like to inform you that there was no supreme council meeting tonight.

"There are always meetings. We have meetings during the day, in the evening and at night.

"Discussions are held on different subjects. Tonight's meeting was part of a regular series of meetings we hold."

Pressed on why the prime minister rushed here after his audience with the Agong, Ahmad insisted that Ismail Sabri was merely coming to his party's headquarters for a regular meeting.

"This is the Umno headquarters. He (Ismail Sabri) is the vice president of Umno. Of course, there are many discussions.

"We also hold engagement sessions. For example, today it was slated for Bera (Parliament constituency), which is also where the prime minister is from.

"Coincidentally it was also the engagement session for Bagan Datuk (Zahid's parliamentary constituency)."

Regarding Kuala Nerus member of parliament Datuk Dr Khairuddin Aman Razali's appearance at the headquarters, he said anyone was welcome at the headquarters.

Khairuddin is also a former Pas central committee member.
