MCA plumps Liow for to make Bentong comeback

KUALA LUMPUR: Former transport minister Tan Sri Liow Tiong Lai has been nominated by MCA for the Bentong parliamentary seat for the 15th General Election (GE15).

MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said party members pledged their support to the former Bentong member of parliament to make a comeback.

"MCA made this decision a year and a half ago. There is little doubt in our minds that Liow is the sole and best candidate for the Bentong parliamentary seat," he said on Facebook today.

Liow, a former MCA president, held Bentong for four terms since 1999, but met his Waterloo in the 14th General Election in 2018, when he was defeated by DAP's Wong Tack.

Wee said though Liow could not defend his seat in the last general election, he still had Bentong and its people at heart.

"He has been silently serving and assisting the residents of Bentong, whether it was a flood or even the Karak fire. He has always been on the frontline helping the victims and gradually implemented the reconstruction plan of the disaster area.

"During the Covid-19 pandemic, Liow also spared no effort in raising funds and materials to help the people.

"MCA fully supports Liow so that he can win the parliamentary seat again and continue with his unfinished plan and tasks for Bentong, so that the development of Bentong is back on track," he added.

He said Liow contributed much during his four terms in the rural Pahang constituency, and many voters had urged him to return.

Wee also voiced his disappointment over DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke's statement that the opposition party would prevent him from making a comeback.

He said such remarks smacked of arrogance and showed Loke had no respect for democracy.
