GE15: Research points to Azmin losing in Gombak

KUALA LUMPUR: Perikatan Nasional election director Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali is expected to lose his Gombak seat.

Research by Institute Darul Ehsan (IDE) points to Azmin's former close associate, Pakatan Harapan candidate Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, the sitting Selangor menteri besar, coming out tops come polling day on Saturday.

This is based on a survey of respondents involving 47 voting centres in the parliamentary seat between Nov 10 and 12.

IDE executive chairman Datuk Dr Mohammad Redzuan Othman said 52.5 per cent of respondents indicated they would vote PH, more than double the 21.9 per cent who said they would cast their ballots for PN.

"Barisan Nasional, meanwhile, only received the support of 13.8 per cent of respondents, with fence-sitters making up 11.6 per cent," he said.

Apart from Azmin and Amirudin, the other contenders for the parliamentary seat are BN's Datuk Seri Megat Zulkarnain Omardin, Jamaludin Mohd Tahir (Parti Pejuang Tanah Air) and Zulkifli Ahmad (independent).

Azmin, who is caretaker international trade and industry minister, first won the seat in 2008 on a PKR ticket and successfully defended it in the 2013 and 2018 general elections.

However, he left PKR in February 2020 with 10 other parliamentarians, in doing so helping to bring about the fall of the Pakatan Harapan federal government. He later joined Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia, which had also been a part of the PH government.

According to Election Commission statistics, the Gombak seat has 206,744 voters.
