Singapore PM invites Anwar to republic

KUALA LUMPUR: Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has invited Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to visit the republic.

Lee said he looked forward to working with the Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman and the new unity government to further strengthen the bilateral relationship between Singapore and Malaysia.

"Indeed, Singapore and Malaysia are close partners. Our countries share a longstanding friendship, underpinned by strong historical, cultural and interpersonal ties.

"There is more that we can do to enhance our bilateral relationship for mutual benefit," he wrote in a Facebook post.

Lee added that he had spoken with Anwar, whom he has known for several decades.

"We last met in Singapore in 2018, when he delivered a lecture at the Singapore Summit on the importance of bilateral relations between Singapore and Malaysia," he said.

Yesterday, Lee sent a congratulatory letter to Anwar on his appointment as Malaysia's 10th prime minister.

"My warmest congratulations on your victory in the 15th General Election (GE15) and on being sworn in as Malaysia's prime minister.

"Congratulations also to PH for its strong performance in the election," added Lee.
