Caucus of Johor BN, PH to ensure continuous prosperity in the state

ISKANDAR PUTERI: A caucus comprising 24 Johor Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan members of parliament will be established to ensure continuous prosperity in the state.

Johor BN chairman Datuk Seri Hasni Mohammad said the proposed caucus mooted by state opposition leader Liew Chin Tong was a good idea to ensure that the state continued to gain development benefits from the unity government.

Hasni, who is also the Simpang Renggam MP, said discussion on the matter would be held after the swearing-in of MPs at the Dewan Rakyat on Dec 19.

"Generally, there are a lot of issues in Johor that need special attention from the federal government, especially in the upgrading of highway, attracting investors to Johor and upgrading the existing facilities as its international entry point involving the ferry terminal.

"These issues need a strong cooperation between the federal and state governments. With the caucus, more developments could be brought into Johor and at the same time prevent us from being left behind in the development agenda.

"Furthermore, Johor has four MPs appointed to the cabinet and the caucus could serve as an important bridge for MPs in Johor to raise crucial issues involving the state," he said at a press conference after the state 2023 Budget debate at the state assembly.

Earlier, Liew, who is also Perling assemblyman and Iskandar Puteri MP, in his debate speech said the establishment of the caucus was vital in ensuring developments in the state continued.

"I suggest Benut assemblyman Datuk Seri Hasni Mohammad as Johor BN chairman sets up a caucus involving the 24 BN and PH MPs.

"The caucus will help Johor government go through briefings and information-sharing so that all the MPs are given detailed reports on the needs and demands of the state government to the federal government."

He said the mechanism would allow Johor to be given focus and priority by the unity government, for the benefit of the development and progress of Bangsa Johor, as well as the state budget.
