Unity government gives stability, will accelerate post-Covid recovery, say Sabah and Sarawak leaders

PUTRAJAYA: The government under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim could lead to stability and the acceleration of economic growth in Sabah and Sarawak after the Covid-19 pandemic.

Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) chairman Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said what's important now was that Malaysia was stable.

"Anwar could bring out a strong federal government that will help Sarawak to recover from the issues we have been facing since the pandemic.

"The Sarawak parties subscribe to that and what's important is that Malaysia is stable and our priority is to develop the economy.

"We trust that Anwar's appointment could continue our development agenda and at the same time help our people to transform the economy," he said after the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the five political coalitions that form the unity government at Perdana Putra here.

Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the agreement gave political power to Sabah.

"Sabah needs this unity government to be strong as it can give us (the state) high hopes, especially towards development and economic aspects.

"This is our focus and I am confident that the unity government could be a strong government wanted by the people of various races in Malaysia," he said.

Earlier, all five political coalitions inked an agreement to support the leadership of Anwar.

The pact for the unity government was signed by several party leaders present, including Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, GPS chief whip Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, Abang Johari and Hajiji.
