Tok Mat: Loss of support from Malays, non-Malays will be the death of Umno

KUALA LUMPUR: The loss of Malay votes, coupled with the absence of votes from non-Malays, will be a "recipe for death" for Umno.

Party deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said the support towards Umno had dwindled since the 12th General Election in 2008.

"The support of the non-Malays has drastically reduced since the last few general elections.

"On certain occasions, we lost because we could not garner even five per cent of their support. For a long time, we have ignored the votes of the non-Malays," he said at the simultaneous launching of the Umno Wanita, Youth and Puteri wings delegates' conference here, tonight.

Mohamad, who is also Rembau member of parliament, said it was important for Umno to explore the "blue ocean strategy" if it wanted to survive.

"Therefore, Umno must explore political potential that is appropriate to the current situation."

With the stand that Umno had taken to support the formation of a unity government, it may open the doors to rebuild confidence in Umno among the non-Malay communities, he added.
