Early to decide on vice-presidency, says Ismail Sabri

BERA: Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob is still undecided on defending his party post.

The Bera member of parliament said it was still too early to decide, but confirmed that he will defend the Bera Umno division chief post.

"I don't know (if I will defend)...I have to discuss with the people of Bera. What I can confirm is that I will defend the Bera Umno chief post. As an MP, I have to continue serving Umno here.

"The date has not been fixed for the party polls....the Umno Supreme Council will decide on the dates for the branch and division elections," he told reporters after opening Bera Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) Disaster Operations Control Centre here today.

The former prime minister was earlier asked if he will defend his vice-presidency or stay out of the party election scheduled before May 19 this year, six months after the 15th General Election(GE15). In March last year, the Umno General Assembly approved a motion to postpone party election to six months after GE15.

When asked about the vice-presidency posts that will be contested, Ismail Sabri said that was the decision taken during the party's general assembly last week.

Asked if the decision has been finalised, he replied that there could be changes if there was someone who challenged the decision.

"As agreed during the general assembly, the president and deputy posts will not be contested but it can also be determined by the Registrar of Societies (if challenged)," he said.
