Umno Supreme Council to decide date of party polls tomorrow

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno Supreme Council will decide the date of the party elections in a meeting tomorrow.

Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said it would involve elections at the branch and division levels.

"Tomorrow's meeting will decide the date of the elections that must be held before May 19.

"The Umno constitution states that the elections must be held within six months after the general election.

"So, the meeting will set the date for the divisions and branches to meet, as well as their respective election date," he said at a press conference at Arina Uniti Tower.

Asked if the Registry of Societies' (RoS) had made a decision following a complaint filed by Umno members regarding the no-contest motion at the party general assembly, the Pontian member of parliament said there were no issues arising over the matter.

"I don't see any issue there."

Two Umno members had filed a complaint with the RoS over the "no-contest" motion at the general assembly for the top two party posts to remain unconstested.

They were submitted by Negri Sembilan Umno member Muhammad Fiqri Firdaus Muhammad Rom and Muhammad Aizat Fikri Mohd Nasir, an Umno member from Terengganu.

Former Umno youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin lauded the move, saying that Umno belonged to all members.
