Isham: Suspensions, sackings comply with party constitution

KUALA LUMPUR: The sackings and suspensions of Umno leaders on Friday were done in accordance with the party's constitution, says its information chief.

Isham Jalil said the dismissal or suspension of members only needed to be referred to the supreme working council.

"The other processes involving the disciplinary board and so on are just internal management practices.

"Therefore, when the supreme working council certified the dismissal and suspension of members it is valid in terms of the Umno constitution and regulations," he said in a statement on Facebook today.

Isham was commenting on criticism by several Umno leaders that due process was not observed in the council's actions.

He added that those who were sacked or suspended, including former Selangor liaison committee chief Tan Sri Noh Omar, can still appeal to the disciplinary board.

"He (Noh) can still meet with the disciplinary board on Jan 30, 2023.

"The Umno disciplinary board is not the Federal Court and the punishment meted out to Noh and Khairy (Jamaluddin) is not a prison sentence or a death sentence."

He said the board and council should not be challenged, as to do so would only worsen the situation.
