KJ: Umno's Friday mass cleansing exercise will cost its upcoming state elections

KUALA LUMPUR: Sacked Umno leader Khairy Jamaluddin said the mass "cleansing exercise" carried out by the party on Friday would hurt its chances in the upcoming state elections.

The former Rembau member of parliament claimed the public had reacted negatively to the decision made by Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and the party supreme council to sack and suspend the members.

"I do not want to inflate my own personal importance.

"However, I would answer the question by focusing on the decision itself rather than the people that were called.

"I think the public has reacted very negatively to the decision made by Zahid," Khairy said during the Breakfast Grille programme on BFM radio station today.

Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan on Friday announced the party's decision to sack Khairy and former Selangor Umno liaison committee chairman Tan Sri Noh Omar for violating the party constitution in GE15.

Ahmad also announced several party members have been suspended from the party for six years including Sembrong MP Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein and former Umno information chief Shahril Hamdan.
