Sanusi hints June dissolution of Kedah state assembly, possible simultaneous polls in six states

ALOR STAR: Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor hinted that the State Legislative Assembly would be dissolved by June to pave the way for the state election.

He also confirmed that there was unofficial understanding among the leaders of all six states concerned to hold the polls simultaneously.

"It is imperative to hold it simultaneously so that the outstation voters from the states involved are able to travel home to cast their vote.

"For example Kedah voters residing in Selangor will be able to return to cast their vote, same goes to Selangor voters who are working in Kedah," he told reporters after attending the state-level Chinese New Year dinner at Seri Mentaloon here yesterday.

Sanusi also hinted that the Kedah State Legislative Assembly would be dissolved by June to pave the way for the polls.

"The fasting month of Ramadan this year falls in March, followed by Aidil Fitri celebration and then Haj pilgrimage and Aidil Adha celebration. On June 16, we are celebrating the birthday of the Sultan of Kedah.

"Only after that we can dissolve the State Legislative Assembly.

"As such, all six states must dissolve their respective State Legislative Assembly latest before the end of July if we wish to hold simultaneous state elections," he said.

Six states, namely Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu, Penang, Selangor and Negri Sembilan, had earlier decided not to hold state elections together with the general election in November last year, since it was held during the annual monsoon flood season.

The current State Legislative Assembly term for the state six states is due to expire by July.
