KUALA LUMPUR: The time has passed for Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali to become Selangor Menteri Besar once again, said a former state executive councillor.
Datuk Iskandar Abdul Samad, who was the housing, building management and squatters committee chairman under Azmin's administration, said there were other potential candidates in the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition to consider.
Iskandar felt that there was no need for PN to rush into making such a decision and they should not jump the gun.
"There are also others with experience who are capable of becoming the Selangor Menteri Besar. (There is) No need to name the future Selangor Menteri Besar before considering all the options.
"True, Azmin was a successful Selangor Menteri Besar but times have changed. The political landscape has changed. We need to consider this as well.
"Furthermore, there are many PN leaders in Selangor that have done well in the 15th General Election (GE15) by winning their seats.
"Selangor PN has many talented leaders which must not be overlooked," said Iskandar today.
Iskandar was commenting on Selangor PN election machinery deputy director Captain (Rtd) Datuk Dr Zulkafperi Hanafi who said there was always an opportunity for Azmin, who is Bukit Antarabangsa assemblyman, to return and lead the state if he wins in the upcoming state election.
Dr Zulkafperi said PN was of the view that Azmin's experience could help him win in Selangor.
Azmin has been Bukit Antarabangsa assemblyman since 2008. He was Menteri Besar from 2014 to 2018. He is also PN information chief.
After the 2018 General Election, Azmin left Selangor and became the federal Economics Minister under the newly set up cabinet led by former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
In GE15, Azmin lost the Gombak parliamentary seat he had held since 2004 to current Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.
