Nurulhidayah gets to run in Umno polls after 20 years of persuading dad

BAGAN DATUK: Datuk Nurulhidayah Ahmad Zahid has revealed that she had to wait for 20 years before her father, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, allowed her to run in Umno divisional elections.

The 45-year-old is up against incumbent Zaro Zatin Isa and Halimah Mohd Noor in the contest to be Bagan Datuk Wanita Umno division chief.

Nurulhidayah said her father had banned her from entering politics because he did not want her to experience what he went through in his political career.

"After 20 years of persuading him that I am ready, he finally allowed me to run in this election.

"My goal in entering politics is to continue Bagan Datuk's development, just as my father did.

"We actually have the same objective in Umno, which is to win back the hearts of the people who were disappointed with Umno once upon a time," she said at the Umno divisional election at Wisma Umno Bagan Datuk, near here, today.

A total of 268 Wanita Umno delegates from Bagan Datuk voted this morning, and the results are expected to be announced tonight.

Asked if carrying her father's name gave her any advantage, Nurulhidayah said there was none.
