Wan Saiful: Bersatu wants Muhyiddin to remain as party president

KUALA LUMPUR: Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia wants Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to remain as the party's president.

Bersatu supreme council member Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan said Muhyiddin's post was different from his previous position as the party information chief.

On Feb 22, the party had accepted Wan Saiful's intention to resign from his post following the corruption charges he faced in court a day earlier.

"(Bersatu) has reached a consensus in wanting Muhyiddin to remain as party president; and I must mention that (the post of president) is different from my post.

"I had been appointed as an information chief. I felt I had a responsibility to let go of that appointment.

"However, Muhyiddin is a leader elected by party members, and they are demanding that he remains as president," he told reporters after the Angkatan Bersatu Anak Muda (Armada) convention here today.

Wan Saiful was responding to a question on whether Muhyiddin needed to resign from his post in the same way that Wan Saiful did.

On Friday, Muhyiddin was charged with six counts of corruption and money laundering involving RM427.5 million.

The Bersatu president, whose actual registered name is Mahiaddin Md Yasin, 76, become the second former prime minister to be charged in court for corruption in the country's history.

For the corruption charges, Muhyiddin could be jailed up to 20 years and fined five times of the money solicited or RM10,000, whichever is higher, upon conviction

For the money laundering charges, Muhyiddin could face a 15-year jail sentence and a fine of at least five times the sum obtained from money laundering or RM5 million, whichever is higher, upon conviction.

Bersatu supreme council is meeting later in the evening today to decide on Muhyiddin's position.
