Zahid: Plots to destabilise unity govt averted [NSTTV]

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said attempts by certain quarters to bring down the unity government have been averted following the outcome of the Umno election.

The party president said it was clear that these attempts, by quarters from within and outside of the party, were something that can be avoided.

"Support from the grassroots was translated into votes in the selection of Umno leadership... The party's aim at the national level is to give full support to the unity government.

"The manifestation was clear. Although there were efforts to topple the government, it was rejected by delegates who cast their votes in the polls," he told a Press conference after chairing the unity government secretariat meeting here tonight.

Zahid said he was confident that Umno's new leadership, together with its component parties in Barisan Nasional (BN), as well as parties from Sabah and Sarawak will further strengthen the unity government.

"We promise that this unity government will continue getting the support it needed from us (Umno) and friends in BN."
