Dr M quits Gerakan Tanah Air

JITRA: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad announced that he is no longer holding any position in Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA), which suffered major defeat in the 15th General Election (GE15) last year.

The former prime minister said he decided to reliquish his position in the GTA after the coalition was unable and failed to gain the support of voters during the polls.

Dr Mahathir, who failed to defend his Langkawi parliamentary seat in GE15, said he refused to be involved with other political parties but will remain active in championing the struggles of the people through the Malay Proclamation.

"The position of the GTA chairman is in the past... I am no longer (holding any positions in GTA).

"GTA did not meet its objective (when it was established). It did not help us (to win GE15) since it is a political entity.

"We can never win (any election) if we continue to move as a (political) party. GTA and Pejuang (Parti Pejuang Tanah Air) lost all 125 seats when we contested in GE15," he told reporters after attending Hari Raya Aidilfitri Open House in Kampung Naga here yesterday.

In GE15, all 125 GTA candidates — including Dr Mahathir and Datuk Seri Mukhriz — failed to even get enough votes to keep their election deposits.
