Kudos to NGOs for helping the needy

LETTERS: It is good to see more welfare foundations and organisations actively helping the needy during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Those in need include single mothers, who are schoolbus, van and taxi operators.

These bodies appeal to the government to provide incentives such as financial aid to single mothers, following the closure of schools until the end of the year and the implementation of the Movement Control Order to curb the Covid-19 pandemic.

Recently, the AEON Foundation, together with non-profit organisation Solidarity Unity Welfare Organisation, helped the single mothers affected by the pandemic in Penang, Shah Alam and Klang in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.

More organisations should come forward to ease this group's burden.Non-governmental organisations must pay attention to those who are facing financial hardship due to the pandemic.

Aware of the problems faced by the single mothers, the Solidarity Unity Welfare Organisation recently distributed essential items, which were prepared by corporations, including the AEON Foundation.

As the school session does not start until early next year, 80 per cent of schoolbus and van operators have ceased operations.

As they no longer have any source of income, most have difficulty paying their monthly hire purchase instalments as the loan moratorium provided by banks has ended. The situation is compounded by late payment interest.

These schoolbus and van operators also have difficulty in paying their employees' salaries, telephone and Internet bills, as well as office rental, due to a loss of income.
