Supporting the prohibition of nuclear weapons

LETTER: MAPIM lauds the latest decision by the United Nations (UN) to enforce the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW).

With the timely enforcement starting yesterday, now there is a blanket ban on all types of nuclear weapons in 51 countries.

Malaysia is among the signatories of the TPNW which outlaws the creation, ownership and deployment of nuclear weapons by signatory states and places obligations on them to assist other victims of nuclear weapons use and testing.

In parallel to the above, MAPIM further urges all of Malaysia's Members of Parliament (MPs) and the whole of Malaysia's civil society movement to support the global effort in ending the use of nuclear weapons around the world.

The time is now for Malaysians from all walks of life to show to the world that the country can punch above its weight on this issue which is affecting humanity at large.

We should lend our voice to the growing resistance towards the use of nuclear weapons.

We, as Malaysians, should say no to the use of nuclear weapons around the world.

Mohd Azmi Abdul Hamid

President, Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organizations (MAPIM)
