Urban speed limit will slow down speed demons

LETTERS: The Transport Ministry's proposal to implement a standard 30kph speed limit for urban and residential areas, as well as cities and villages, should be welcomed.

Without a standard speed limit, many vehicles are driven at high speed in these areas.

Many motorcyclists and pedestrians have been injured or killed due to reckless driving and speeding.

The government has to be firm to protect lives.

People are always in a hurry when driving. They become instant speed demons, even when driving in residential areas.

Many residential areas have road humps but these have not helped much.

On numerous occasions I have encountered close mishaps from speeding vehicles because I slowed down for a hump.

The driver would overtake my car at the hump and give me a menacing look before speeding off.

The ministry also needs to enforce the speed limit in highways.

The speed limit for cars is 110kph.

The speed limit for heavy vehicles is 80 or 90 kph and these are stated on the rear of these vehicles.

But some drive beyond 110kph, tailgating and overtaking vehicles.

When they drive beyond 110kph, they won't be able to control or brake during an emergency.

We need to come down hard on these drivers of heavy vehicles.
