KTMB explains mishap, strives to improve service

LETTERS: We refer to the letter "KTM should have contingency plans" (NST June 23).

Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) appreciates Y.S. Chan's concern and comments regarding the recent Electric Train Service (ETS) incidents involving train 9178 from KL Sentral to Butterworth. KTMB regrets the inconvenience to passengers caused by the unexpected event.

The cause of interruption was due to power outage, as some abandoned trunking cable that accommodate the high voltage cable (belonging to the highway authority) had fallen on the KTMB overhead line, resulting in the disruption to both lines of KTMB's electricity supply along a sector approaching Butterworth station.

Following that, the train was forced to stop at Bukit Tengah station, affecting three other KTM Komuter services. Our electrification team investigated the source of the outage, which was completed at 10.46pm. The service was restored at 4.45am the next day.

Since the repairs took longer than expected, KTMB's customer service issued an apology and announced the disruption on its Facebook page.

We strive to improve our services by updating our standard operating procedures and contingency plans, especially during any untoward situation.
