Be proactive in maintaining roads, street lights

LETTERS: Relevant agencies should be doing something about the terrible road conditions along Jalan Sg Buloh-Kuala Selangor right from Bandar Sri Damansara (FT) border to Bandar Bestari Jaya (formerly known as Batang Berjuntai).

The road needs to be resurfaced as various stretches are in bad shape and rough to drive on.

What was once a pleasurable drive through this rural greenery has now become irritating. There are numerous traffic lights practically at every kilometre due to new junctions and housing estates.

This shows poor planning on the part of the authorities, who could have opted for better solutions by widening the road to accommodate U-turns opposite the kampung and housing estates instead of installing traffic lights.

The developers and the Works Ministry could share the cost for construction of the U-turn.

Or, better still, build a flyover as a permanent long-term solution since the housing estates involve thousands of acres of oil palm slated for future residential and industrial development.

This is a large area stretching from Kuang to Ijok, Bandar Bestari Jaya and Kuala Selangor.

It is slated to be one of the main future growth areas of Selangor. Therefore, both federal and state governments need to provide bigger allocations for the improvement of infrastructure.

At this juncture, one should thank the late works minister Tun S. Samy Vellu for straightening a long section of the road near the Kota Puteri housing estate, which he implemented as promised during a by-election campaign for the Ijok state constituency.

The 3km stretch of blinding corners and hairpin bends have been by-passed with a straight parallel road much to the relief of road users.

Additionally, one has to remark about the street lights from Bandar Sri Damansara to Bandar Bestari Jaya.

A major part of this lengthy road has street lights but regrettably, a large number of them are not working.

One sees hundreds of street lights on this long stretch of road not lighting up. Can't they be repaired?

Street lights are not installed for decorative purposes but to ensure safety and security of road users and pedestrians at night.

Can't the Selangor Public Works Department ensure and monitor that the street light contractors do their job dutifully and efficiently?

As long as no one monitors these contractors, they will take it easy and not do the job they are paid for by the government.
