The George in Penang, which cost RM100 mln, will operate fully this month

Penang's The George, a five-star boutique hotel with a colonial design is scheduled to operate by the end of this month.

The five-star hotel, located along busy Penang Road, at the junction of Argyll Road in George Town, was developed for RM100 million, and is owned and run by Venice Sdn Bhd.

The total construction, according to the company's managing director Catherine Teoh, took five years to complete.

The George's construction started in 2018, and on December 12, 2022, it held a grand opening.

Yeoh remarked at the hotel's grand opening that The George features 92 rooms, including 30 suites, all of which have been renovated while maintaining their vintage character.

Teoh said that both domestic and foreign tourists make up the hotel's target market, which is situated in Penang's heritage district.

Plans for The George include expanding the business by adding an annex building that would house extra amenities including a conference room and a spa.

The current facilities at The George include a saltwater swimming pool, gymnasium, and steam bath.

Penang chief minister Chow Kon Yeow, who was present at the opening ceremony, said The George's team has created a new milestone in Penang's hospitality history.

"I look forward to The George adding vibrancy to this part of the heritage zone by bringing more exciting events to the hotel," Chow said during his speech.
