BAM show goes on despite CMCO

THOUGH Kuala Lumpur is now under Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO), the Badminton Association of Malaysia have decided to let the National Junior Ranking Challenge continue.

The junior meet, which started on Monday at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Kuala Lumpur, was scheduled to run until Oct 23.

Although BAM had considered putting the competition on hold, they eventually decided to let it run its course despite the CMCO in KL, Selangor and Putrajaya from Oct 14-27.

BAM secretary general Datuk Kenny Goh explained that it was an internal event and did not involve any outsiders.

"The junior event is very much like a training session and it does come under the National Sports Council's guidelines as a scheduled training session," said Kenny.

"In the first place, there are no outsiders involved. There are no match officials or line judges and it is the players themselves who are involved.

"In a way, it's actually a bubble so we decided to just let the competition run its course instead of putting it on hold."

In yesterday's matches, 16-year-old Justin Hoh continued his blistering form to top the standings in the boys' singles Group A.

The KL shuttler posted his fourth win in five matches after whipping Jimmy Wong 21-11, 21-13.

Justin leads the 10-player standings with a 4-1 record and is primed for a top three finish after the halfway mark.

Top seed Jacky Kok also kept pace as he dealt Ong Zhen Yi his first defeat with a 21-19, 21-12 win. The 18-year-old is second in the standings followed by Zhen Yi and Ong Ken Yon respectively.

The top three players in Group A will go on to meet three of the senior backup players in the playoff stages.
