Pearly-Thinaah pull off another stunner

KUALA LUMPUR: Budding women's pair Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah keep getting better and better as they powered into their second straight BWF Tour Super 1000 quarter-finals on Thursday.

The World No 39 defeated World No 60 Vimala Heriau-Margot Lambert of France 19-21, 21-16, 21-9 in the second round of the Toyota Thailand Open, a day after stunning World No 9 Chang Ye Na-Kim Hye Rin of South Korea at the Impact Arena in Bangkok.

It is certainly an achievement for the young pair who also reached the quarter-finals of the Yonex Thailand Open last week.

"Actually, we were tired today, and it was a really tough game for us. We made a lot of simple mistakes, especially on defence," admitted Pearly on Thursday.

"But we kept supporting each other, and it was that fighting spirit that saw us through."

Thinaah added: "We're pleased to get through, but we're not too satisfied with our performance today.

"We started quite slow and it wasn't until the subsequent games that we made a breakthrough.

"I think what we did really well after the first game was improving our serves and receiving. We certainly took a lot of points from them there."

Pearly-Thinaah will certainly fancy their chances of going further when they take on teammates and World No 14 Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean for a place in the semi-finals on Friday.

Mei Kuan-Meng Yean had earlier secured their spot after beating Australian pair Setyana Mapasa-Gronya Somerville 21-17, 21-15.

World No 25 Vivian Hoo-Yap Cheng Wen also made it a glorious day for the women's doubles department when they downed France's Emilie Lefel-Anne Tran 19-21, 21-17, 21-12 to be the third pair through to the last eight.

In other results, veteran independent shuttler Liew Daren kept the Malaysian challenge in men's singles going after making the last eight. He faces World No 4 Viktor Axelsen of Denmark on Friday.

In the men's doubles, Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong and Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi all booked their quarter-final spots.
