Aaron-Wooi Yik advance to Thailand Open semi-finals

KUALA LUMPUR: Men's doubles Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik earned their revenge to check into the semi-finals of the Toyota Thailand Open.

The World No 9 put their best form forward as they knocked out compatriots Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong 21-16, 21-13 in the quarter-finals at the Impact Arena on Friday.

It was certainly sweet revenge for Aaron-Wooi Yik who succumbed to the Olympic silver medallists in the first round of the Yonex Thailand Open last week.

The pair face India's S. Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty on Saturday as they look to earn their first final appearance since finishing as runners-up at the All England in 2019.

World No 10 Rankireddy-Chirag booked their spot in the semi-finals by eliminating World No 15 Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi 21-18, 24-22.

"We are quite satisfied with our match today because we had a game plan and we stuck to our strategy," said Aaron on Friday.

"We did expect it to be a tough match as we certainly had last week's defeat on our minds.

"We tried our best to recover from that and learn from our mistakes.

"Maybe luck was on our side today but we are certainly happy to get our sweet revenge against V Shem-Wee Kiong."

In the men's singles, veteran shuttler Liew Daren's fine run came to an end after he fell to World No 4 Viktor Axelsen 16-21, 15-21.

"I wasn't at my best from the start, and I felt the pressure and was playing catch up all the time," admitted Daren.

"I think Viktor did play very well, and I was just trying to break his rhythm and slow him, but the big lead he had was the difference."

Axelsen, who won the first leg of the BWF Asian tour, goes up against second seed Chou Tien Chen of Taiwan in the semi-finals.
