KUALA LUMPUR: The Singapore Open on June 1-6, the last of the badminton qualifier for the Tokyo Olympics, has been been cancelled due to the Covid pandemic.

This was jointly announced by the organiser, Singapore Badminton Association, and Badminton World Federation (BWF) today.

The BWF said the Singapore Open will not be rescheduled.

"All attempts were made by the organisers and BWF to provide a safe tournament environment for all participants.

"However, rising Covid-19 cases globally led to complex challenges in managing inbound travel," the BWF said.

Earlier, the Malaysia Open, scheduled for May 25-30, was postponed following a spike in Covid-19 cases.

This means that players vying for places in this year's Tokyo Olympics may no longer need to collect points, as the Singapore Open was the final Olympic qualifier on the calendar.
