Aaron-Wooi Yik 'immune' to talk of Olympic cancellation

To date, the fate of the Tokyo Olympics, scheduled for July, still hangs in the balance due to the global Covid-19 pandemic.

But for the national badminton players under the Road to Tokyo (RTT) programme, it's just another day at the office.

Top men's doubles shuttler Aaron Chia, 24, said the players, who continue to train at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara, can't be too bothered with matters that are beyond their control.

To him and his partner, Soh Wooi Yik, it's all about making an eventful debut.

"I know that things are still looking very grey. No one knows if the Olympics will go on or not, but that is beyond our control.

"Wooi Yik and I have been training really hard because it's going to be our Olympic debut. We want to make an impression. That's all we ever think about."

"It's tough to predict. We don't really know how strong some of the pairs are, or how well they've prepared because there hasn't been much competition.

"And from the tournaments we have competed in, not everyone was there. It's really hard to say.

"In some ways, it's an open affair. That's is why we're preparing hard for it even if there is a possibility that the Olympics might be called off," added Aaron.

Aaron-Wooi Yik, currently ranked No 9 in the world, last played at the Swiss Open in March.
