Malaysians ace Spanish test

National women's singles coach Indra Wijaya is pleased with the performances of his three charges at the Spanish International that concluded yesterday.

Not only did the trio of S.Kisona, Goh Jin Wei and Eoon Qi Xuan achieve the semi-final target but did one better with Kisona and Jin Wei meeting in the final in La Nucia.

Indra applauded the effort but admitted that the job at hand was far from over.

"Overall, I'm very happy with the performances of all three players. The fighting spirit and the attitude on court are what I want to see from now on.

"This is not a major tournament, but step by step, I'd expect them to move up the ladder and play in higher-tier tournaments.

"Kisona was lucky to qualify for the Asian leg of the World Tour in January and the All England in March. She played against some of the world's best players in both events.

"However, it was too much for her. She is not at that level yet, and it dented her morale and confidence.

"Her fine showing here will boost her confidence. Slowly, she will be ready to move up the ranks again.

"The same can be said for Jin Wei, who has been struggling in the last two years due to medical complications and a lack of tournaments because of Covid-19.

"I'm happy she showed no signs of anxiety or stress and managed to play the entire tournament.

"All in all, I am very happy. I just want to see consistency when we get back," said Indra yesterday.

In the semi-finals yesterday, fourth-seeded Kisona dispatched France's Yaelle Hoyaux 21-18, 21-10, while Jin Wei secured her place with a convincing 21-17, 21-11 win over Qi Xuan.

Meanwhile, Malaysia were also involved in two other finals late yesterday.

In the men's doubles final, Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun took on France's Lucy's Corvee-Ronan Labar after seeing off England's Matthew Clare-Ethan Van Leeuwen 21-11, 21-11 in the last four.

In the mixed doubles final, Kai Wun-Teo Mei Xing took on third seeds Callum Hemming-Jessica Pugh of England after defeating Russian Rodion Kargaev-Viktoriia Vorobeva 21-17, 21-16 in the semis.
