Rousing Olympic debut for Aaron-Wooi Yik

Malaysia's Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik can breathe easier now after defeating South Korea's formidable Choi Solgyu-Seo Seung Jae in their men's doubles Group D opener at the Tokyo Olympics yesterday.

Overcoming the World No 8 Koreans has also set World No 9 Aaron-Wooi Yik in the mood to take on World No 2 Mohammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia tomorrow.

A win over the former world champions will not only guarantee Aaron-Wooi Yik top spot in the group but enhance their position in the last eight stage.

This is because the group winners will be seeded, and thus avoid facing each other in the quarter-finals after the redraw.

Olympic newcomers Aaron-Wooi Yik know how important a win is, but refrained from commenting further on the impending clash.

"We hear you Malaysia, we hear your support," was what Aaron posted on his social media page following their 24-22, 21-17 win over the Koreans yesterday.

"I know all eyes are on our match against Ahsan-Hendra on Monday (tomorrow) but we don't want to think too much about it.

"We will stay grounded, and give our best on the day. For now, we are happy to get our Olympic campaign off to a great start," added Aaron.

Aaron-Wooi Yik have gotten the better of Ahsan-Hendra only once in seven previous meetings.

In fact, it was the Indonesians who stood between Aaron-Wooi Yik and their first major title, in the final of the 2019 All England.

The last time the two pairs met was at the World Tour Finals in Bangkok earlier this year. Aaron-Wooi Yik managed to steal a game but still lost 18-21, 21-17, 21-11.

The 2019 Sea Games champions must also be wary of Canada's Jason Anthony Ho-Shue-Nyl Yakura, who make up Group D.

Meanwhile, mixed doubles Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying have their work cut out for them to reach the knockout stage after losing their opening group match.

Peng Soon-Liu Ying, the 2016 Rio silver medallists, lost 21-18, 10-21, 21-16 to Hong Kong's Tang Chun Man-Tse Ying Suet. They face Germany's Mark Lamfuss-Isabel Herttrich next.

Also taking to the court today in his opening Group N tie is Malaysia's All England champion Lee Zii Jia who plays Ukraine's Artem Pochtarov.
