Aaron-Wooi Yik battle-ready

Competing in the Olympics is a feeling unlike any other for Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik.

And it is this feeling that could inspire the World No 9 to go the extra mile against the more fancied Mohammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia today in the second Group D tie of the Tokyo Olympics.

Both the Malaysian and Indonesian pairs have won their first group matches, and the result today will determine who tops the group.

The odds favour Ahsan-Hendra, but Aaron-Wooi Yik will not throw in the towel without a fight.

Speaking to Timesport following their convincing 24-22, 21-17 upset over South Korea's Choi Solgyu-Seo Seung Jae on Saturday, Wooi Yik said: "Ahsan-Hendra are at a different level surely.

"But we came here to fight for Malaysia, and fight we will. We just have to maintain this confidence and give everything we got on court.

"I must admit the atmosphere here at the Olympics is so different from other tournaments. Even without spectators, it feels different. There is just so much nerves getting on that court.

"We know everyone in Malaysia is rallying behind us. We will do our best."

For the record, Aaron-Wooi Yik have only beaten Ahsan-Hendra once in seven previous meetings.

Two years ago, the Indonesian former world champions denied Aaron-Wooi Yik their first major title at the 2019 All England final in Birmingham.

The last time the two pairs met was at the World Tour Finals in January in Bangkok.

Only the top two pairs from each group will qualify for the quarter-finals in Tokyo. Group winners will be seeded and will avoid each other in the last eight.

At the previous edition in Rio five years ago, Malaysia settled for silver in the men's doubles event through Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong.
