Choong Hann's Paris plot

Malaysia merely met a short-term target in winning a badminton bronze at the Tokyo Olympics, said BAM coaching director Wong Choong Hann.

The national body's next move is to elevate their second stringers, apart from the seniors, for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Choong Hann said: "We need to have maximum representation in the men's singles and doubles at the next Olympics, that is our target.

"We also need to set realistic goals for our other disciplines. I don't want to make empty claims without providing any facts and figures.

"What we have achieved is not long term. We need to groom more players to join the front-liners.

"We need to push this agenda to have a good wingman in each event."

According to Choong Hann, the backup shuttlers have been showing good progress, but they are still not up there among the world's best.

However, in time and with proper planning, the former world No 1 is confident of delivering the elusive gold medal in Paris three years from now.

"At many points, we have to prepare for the worst to be failures. Fear is part of being human.

"To be a champion, we must learn and manage and have strong faith that our preparation is good enough to bring back glory.

"We need the urgency to buck up. We have to build up from scratch again, to see who is maturing and who will shoulder the responsibility.

"The gap is closing fast between the players but we are not up there yet.

"In time, these players stand a better chance to conquer the world, and to bring back the gold medal," added Choong Hann.

Despite achieving the one medal target set for the Tokyo Olympics through men's doubles Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, BAM fell short of repeating their achievements of five years ago in Rio.

At the previous Olympics, the Malaysian badminton squad won three silver medals through former world No 1 Lee Chong Wei, men's doubles Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong, and mixed doubles Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying.
