Not much rest for shuttlers after Olympics

THE 14-day quarantine is all the rest the national badminton squad will get after their participation in the Tokyo Olympics.

BAM coaching director Wong Choong Hann said the team will quickly shift their focus towards the Sudirman Cup in Vantaa, Finland, on Sept 26-Oct 3, and the delayed Thomas and Uber Cup Finals in Aarhus, Denmark, on Oct 9-17.

The former world No 1 said: "Unfortunately we won't have much of a break after this. We have to quickly shift our focus towards the Sudirman Cup and the Thomas and Uber Cups.

"We have yet to finalise our squads for the team events but we have already started discussing and will be finalising our squads soon.

"The bulk of the players from the Sudirman Cup will be part of the Thomas and Uber Cups as well, and then some players will fly in from Kuala Lumpur to join us in Denmark."

On how the players are doing since arriving from Tokyo earlier this week, Choong Hann added: "So far so good.

"The first Covid-19 test return negative results, so we are all just confined to our hotel rooms.

"There will be another test on the 10th day.

"We might allow our players to meet their families once we're done with our quarantine period but it won't be a long break, we don't have much time to prepare for the upcoming events."

At the Olympics, Malaysia won one bronze through men's doubles Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik.
