Tze Yong eyes Thomas Cup stage

WITH three wins under his belt so far in the BAM internal ranking, Ng Tze Yong looks set to make his Thomas Cup debut next month.

The 21-year-old men's singles said it is his target to feature for Malaysia in the world team competition in Aarhus, Denmark, on Oct 9-17.

Tze Yong came into the picture after making the team for the Asia Championships in the Philippines last year, which was also the qualifying event for the Thomas Cup.

"Yes, my target is definitely to make the Thomas Cup squad. My only experience in a team tournament this big, was the team meet in the Philippines last year.

"Even then, I did not play in any of the fixtures. Hopefully I can do enough to impress the coaches and prove my worth this time," said Tze Yong.

Since the start of BAM's internal ranking event on Monday, Tze Yong has already got the better of his peers, Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin and Lim Chong King, as well as former Asian junior champion, Leong Jun Hoa.

Tze Yong still has two more matches to play — against national No 2 Cheam June Wei, and the up and coming national junior, Justin Hoh.

"I am enjoying a good run in form and I hope to carry this through to the coming year.

"It is important to try and get my ranking as high as possible, or it will be tough to play in tournaments next year.

"The Covid-19 situation has made it tough for everybody," added Tze Yong, who won the Spanish International Challenge in March.

BAM coaching director Wong Choong Hann recently pointed out that internal ranking will be one of the yardsticks to gauge the national players before finalising the Thomas and Uber Cup squads by the end of the week. BAM will also announce the squad for the Sudirman Cup in Vantaa, Finland on Sept 26-Oct 3.

For the Thomas Cup, Malaysia are in Group D with 2014 champions Japan, Canada and England, while for the Uber Cup, Malaysia are in the same group with 15-time champions China, Denmark and Canada.

For the Sudirman Cup, Malaysia are in Group D with Japan, England and Egypt.
