New coaches to hit the courts running

THE BA of Malaysia (BAM) are expecting immediate results from their newly appointed coaches — Rexy Mainaky and K. Yogendran — who will report for duty at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara today.

In line with the national body's Project 24 blueprint, BAM coaching and training committee chairman Datuk Kenny Goh would like to see both coaches beefing up their respective departments and meeting their key performance indicators (KPI) as soon as possible.

"Our expectations are very high on both these coaches because they are not new to our setup and are very experienced in their field.

"It is only right that they get straight into business to beef up our national squad and start delivering the results," said Kenny yesterday.

Rexy, who had previously served BAM as doubles coach from 2005-2012, returns as deputy coaching director. He will overlook the entire doubles department.

Prior to this, Rexy was the coaching head for the BA of Thailand.

Yogendran, a former national player, was hired to strengthen the men's singles department, following his impressive work as head coach of the Mauritius national team for the past six years.

The 39-year-old will join head coach Hendrawan and Tey Seu Bock.

"Our coaching director Wong Choong Hann will be working very closely with both Rexy and Yogendran, and I believe will also lay out the KPIs expected of them.

"As usual, we will review all of our coaches periodically.

"We hope to see our coaches making some drastic changes because we really want to see results soon.

"Underperforming players will have to face the consequences," added Kenny.

BAM's goal through Project 24 is to end Malaysia's wait for the elusive Olympic gold at the 2024 Paris Games.

Other targets include winning the Thomas Cup and Sudirman Cup before the 2024 Olympics and doing well in multi-sports championships.
