Tze Yong marches on

Men's singles shuttler Ng Tze Yong is unperturbed by the Covid-19 breakout at the India Open.

A total of seven players were confirmed by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) to have tested positive and were withdrawn from the competition yesterday.

World No 60 Tze Yong was, however, on his best professional front as he did not let the situation affect him by charging into the quarter-finals.

The 21-year-old needed to dig deep as he came from a game down to beat France's world No 79 Lucas Claerbout 20-22, 21-15, 21-18 in the second round in New Delhi.

It was a much-welcomed result for the Johor-born who is determined to put up a strong performance in the absence of top names at the Indian meet.

And it will also be his first ever quarter-final appearance in a Super 500 event for Tze Yong.

Tze Yong, who will be looking to push on, plays Ireland's Nhat Nguyen, who defeated India Rahul Yadav Chittaboina 21-17, 21-13, in the last eight.

However, it was the end of the road of independent shuttler Soong Joo Ven, who went down 21-12, 21-12 to reigning world champion Loh Kean Yew of Singapore.

Meanwhile, it was also a good day for mixed pairs Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing and Chan Peng Soon-Valeree Siow.

Top seeds Kian Meng-Pei Jing were hardly tested as they put the off-court worries behind them by breezing past India's Siddharth Jakhar-Megha Morchana Bora 21-6, 21-11.

"I think the news that seven players had tested positive was definitely worrying, especially for me as I had gastric pains a day earlier," admitted Pei Jing.

"But we managed to focus on every point today, and we played our best even though our opponents were not strong."

They play Russia's Konstantin Abramov-Anastasiia Akchurina today.

The newly formed pairing of Peng Soon and Valeree enjoyed an easy run out as they thrashed India's Kashish Sharma-Saruni Sharma 21-6, 21-8 and play Russia's second seeds Rodion Alimov-Alina Davletova today.

Chen Tang Jie-Peck Yen Wei also checked into the last eight without lifting their racquets as their opponents, K. Sai Pratheek-Gayatri Gopichand Pullela, were among those withdrawn after the Covid-19 outbreak.

The World 40 will take on India's Venkat Gaurav Prasad-Juhi Dewangan for a place in the semi-finals today.
