Shuttler Zii Jia appeals [NSTTV]

KUALA LUMPUR: World No 7 Lee Zii Jia has appealed to the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) to overturn the decision they meted out on him.

The All-England champion was handed a two-year suspension by the national body on Friday as a result of tendering his resignation prematurely earlier this month.

The two-year suspension was certainly a huge blow to Zii Jia as he would certainly miss the 2024 Paris Olympics as well several other major tournaments.

It was also a decision that sparked nationwide fury with many believing the decision by BAM was far too harsh.

Zii Jia has taken the next initiative by submitting an appeal to BAM.

In a statement today, BAM confirmed that they received an appeal letter from the Kedahan.

"Recent events concerning Zii Jia's resignation from BAM and the subsequent decision by the council to not register him for international tournaments for two years has had a profound impact, not only from the badminton fraternity but on the people of Malaysia as well," read the statement.

"We are fully aware of the outpouring anger and frustration and we truly understand the disappointment expressed towards the association.

"This situation has been extremely challenging and has garnered attention from all parties, from politicians to international players.

"We appreciate all the comments, criticisms and overall feedback directed towards us and we will take note of the passionate sentiments expressed by fellow Malaysians.

"As a national institution, we have an established set of processes and procedures that must be followed and it is important to note that this decision is not made without avenues of appeal.

"We can confirm that we have received an appeal letter from Zii Jia and as the custodian of national badminton interest, we are looking into the matter with great urgency to find a solution."
