Liew's touch for Zii Jia

While there has been no official confirmation, it is understood that 2018 World Championships bronze medallist Liew Daren will be joining Lee Zii Jia's professional team.

Zii Jia, who quit the national team in January to pursue an independent career, will likely secure Daren as assistant coach to Indonesian Indra Wijaya.

It is learnt that Daren, 35, will continue competing in tournaments as a professional while assisting the Malaysian world No 7 both as coach and sparring partner.

For the record, Daren is currently Malaysia's second-highest ranked men's singles player after Zii Jia, at world No 36.

"I believe it's only a matter of time before it is announced officially," said a source close to both Zii Jia and Daren.

"It makes sense for Daren to join Zii Jia as assistant coach, because he is already 35, but could still double up as a good sparring partner for him at international events.

"Logistically, it will also ease the burden on Indra, who may not obtain a visa easily when traveling for tournaments."

Last month, Zii Jia confirmed that former national women's singles head coach Indra was joining his professional team.

Not long after that, the reigning All England champion announced that he was now sponsored by Victor, a sports equipment brand.

Earlier, Zii Jia had pointed out that he intends to bring his team along for the German Open this week and All England next week.

Daren, who only recently recovered from Covid-19, has decided to skip the German Open but will travel to Birmingham on Saturday for the All England.

Zii Jia will open his German Open campaign against Mark Caljouw of the Netherlands.

BAM confirmed yesterday that world No 46 Ng Tze Yong has been withdrawn from the German Open due to a minor injury.
