Bad day for Malaysian pairs at Swiss Open

KUALA LUMPUR: There was no joy for the Malaysian camp as both men's pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani and mixed pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie fell at the final hurdle at the Swiss Open.

World No 18 Sze Fei-Izzuddin, who are seeking their second title in three tournaments, were unable to get the better of Indonesia's world No 9 Fajar Alfian-Muhammad Rian Ardianto as they lost 21-18, 21-19 in the final in Basel on Sunday.

The pair, who had won the German Open earlier this month, put up a strong effort but came up short against the in-form Indonesians in a 40-minute contest.

Sixth seeds Soon Huat-Shevon, on the other hand, will be disappointed in themselves for letting slip a golden opportunity to end their title drought.

The world No 13, whose last title was the Singapore Open in 2018, were unable to sustain the pressure despite taking the first game as they went down 12-21, 21-18, 21-17 to German world No 15 Mark Lamsfuss-Isabel Lohau in the final.

In other results, Indonesia's Jonatan Christie bagged the men's singles title after beating India's H.S. Prannoy 21-12, 21-18 in the final.

India's PV Sindhu took the women's singles title by beating Thailand's Busanan Ongbamrungphan 21-16, 21-8 while Bulgaria's Gabriela Stoeva-Stefani Stoeva claimed the women's doubles crown with a 21-14, 21-12 win over Germany's Linda Efler-Lohau.
