Pearly-Thinaah off to a winning start in Indonesia Open

KUALA LUMPUR: Women's doubles Pearly Tan-M.Thinaah advanced to the second round of the Indonesia Open today.

The world No. 10, who reached the semi-finals of the Super 500 Indonesia Masters last week, cleared the first round at the expense of their national teammates Anna Cheong-Teoh Mei Xing with a 21-12, 21-16 win.

"We're happy to reach the second round, but it is early days. There are still areas for us to improve if we want to do well here," Thinaah said.

The 2021 Swiss Open champions will face the winners of the match between fourth seeds Yuki Fukushima-Sayaka Hirota of Japan and Thailand sisters, Aimsaard Benyapa-Nuntakarn next.

In the mixed doubles, both Chan Peng Soon-Cheah Yee See and Chen Tang Jie-Valeree Siow picked up impressive first-round victories, but they will be up against formidable opponents in the round of 16 tomorrow.

Peng Soon-Yee See, who defeated England's Marcus Ellis-Lauren Smith 21-15, 21-16, will face world No. 4 Wang Yi Lyu-Huang Dong Ping of China while Tang Jie-Valeree, who scored a 21-17, 21-14 win over teammates Choong Hon Jian-Peck Yen Wei, will take on world No. 5 Praveen Jordan-Melati Daeva Oktavianti of Indonesia.

In the men's doubles, national duo Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani went down 21-19, 21-14 to recently crowned Indonesia Masters champions and world No. 6 Fajar Alfian-Muhammad Rian Ardianto.

Earlier in the day, veteran Liew Daren suffered a first-round exit following a 21-19, 21-18 loss to Hong Kong's Lee Cheuk Yiu in the men's singles.
