Getting 'best of both worlds' deal ready, as BAM works on draft copy for pros

KUALA LUMPUR: The contents of the BAM draft, which is expected to be ready by this weekend, will be of great interest to the independent players.

The draft will outline how the pro shuttlers, including Lee Zii Jia, and national players collaborate in training at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM).

BAM, who plan to give the pros access to the ABM facilities in Bukit Kiara, see the move as win-win for both parties.

On the surface, the pro shuttlers and their coaches welcome the BAM move, but said they need to look into the details of the proposal before making further comments.

BAM high performance director Dr Tim Jones, who is tasked with working out the details with BAM secretary general Datuk Kenny Goh, told Timesport that it is important for the move to mutually benefit all the parties involved.

With the "best of both worlds" on his mind, Jones said: "I'm working through it (the draft) with the coaching directors (Wong Choong Hann and Rexy Mainaky) on a way that opening up (ABM facilities) can be mutually beneficial.

"I do like the idea of combining the best of both worlds, it will help Malaysia do better which is the ultimate aim.

"In terms of timeline, I would like to have something drafted by the end of this week.

"We will look to engage with the independent players as we need to see it from both sides."

Earlier, BAM president Tan Sri Norza Zakaria announced that the national association was ready to work with top independent players for the greater good of the sport in Malaysia. However, these players must be of a certain standard and ranking for the joint-training.

Among the top professionals outside the national setup are Asian champion and world No 4 Zii Jia, two-time former world junior champion Goh Jin Wei, former World Championships bronze medallists Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi, and Commonwealth Games bronze medallists Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing.
