World-class Games for shuttlers

KUALA LUMPUR: It may only be the Malaysia Games, but state shuttlers are set to get a taste of world-class badminton when they take to court at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil.

Former international Razif Sidek, the Federal Territories head coach, said it will be an experience to cherish for some of the youngsters, who at most have only been a spectator at the venue, which is the venue of the Malaysia Open and Malaysia Masters.

Following the team managers' meeting yesterday, Razif said badminton will likely steal the thunder of the Games, with several big names like Ng Tze Yong and Leong Jun Hao in the fray.

"So far, it's all systems go for badminton. Looking at the playing field, I foresee top-level competition.

"Everyone wants badminton to be as smooth sailing as possible with very few hiccups.

"One of the issues raised earlier is on the athletes' jerseys and the name printed on them. The organisers want to stick to the Badminton World Federation ruling as closely as possible, but we will see," said Razif.

It is understood that certain states have only prepared two sets of jerseys for their players, while some have four. In the case of a dispute or protest, it will be up to the referee's discretion.

Meanwhile, former Asian junior champion Leong Jun Hao wants to strike gold in his final appearance at the Games.

The world No 89 men's singles hopes to re-ignite his career by catching up to more established shuttlers like Lee Zii Jia and Tze Yong, who are Malaysia's current top two.

"I am already 23, and it's high time I catch up to people like Zii Jia and Tze Yong. I hope this Games will kick start my career again.

"This will be my first tournament since the Taiwan Open in July, and I want to get that feeling again before competing internationally.

"My goal is to break into the world's top 50 by this year," said Jun Hao, who will likely face national teammate Eogene Ewe of Perak in the second round after receiving a first-round bye.

The other national players in the fray include Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin of Selangor and fourth seed Jacky Kok of Kedah.
