Aaron-Wooi Yik brace for 'bubble battle'

KUALA LUMPUR: Bubble or no bubble, world champions Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik are ready to head to Guangzhou, China, for the World Tour Finals on Dec 14-18.

Aaron, who got married last month, said: "As professionals, we need to get used to this (playing in a safety bubble).

"We understand that we may have to play in a bubble again for the World Tour Finals, but this is up to the host nation. They are taking precautions because it is the rule of their country.

"As players, we have to be mentally prepared at all times to face these challenges."

Earlier, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) confirmed that China will, for the first time, host a major badminton event after closing its borders in the past two years due to Covid-19.

While there has been no confirmation from the host or world governing body, it is believed that the US$1.5 million (RM7 million) season-ending event will be held behind closed doors.

A number of top players have previously complained about the strict protocols implemented when the tournament was part of the World Tour in Thailand early last year and again when it was held in Bali, Indonesia.

Aaron, however, said he and Wooi Yik will continue to play their game, and not allow their focus to be distracted.

Meanwhile, Aaron took the opportunity to thank the fans who congratulated him and Wooi Yik after they moved up a rung to a career high world No 4 today.

"Personally, rankings don't matter much to me, what's more important are the results that we deliver.

"Nevertheless, we'd like to thank everyone for their continuous support.

"For now, our preparations are for the upcoming European tournaments," added Aaron, who together with Wooi Yik, will head to Odense for the Super 750 Denmark Open on Oct 18-23 before competing in the French Open on Oct 25-30."
