Tang Jie-Ee Wei claim Iran International Challenge title

KUALA LUMPUR: Things are looking very promising for national mixed-doubles pair Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei, who were crowned Iran International Challenge champions today.

Tang Jie-Ee Wei, playing in only their fifth tournament since forming their partnership late last year, defeated national teammates Hoo Pang Rong-Teoh Mei Xing 21-19, 21-15, in the final at the Iran Badminton Federation Sports Hall in Teheran.

It was their second title together after their Bangladesh IC win in December, and Tang Jie-Ee Wei can look forward to breaking into the world top 50 when the updated rankings are released this week. They are currently ranked No. 56 in the world.

Acknowledging that it is still early days, Chen told Timesport: "Surely, this is a very important win for Ee Wei and I. However, we cannot get carried away. We need to stay humble and continue motivating each other."

Tang Jie-Ee Wei, who want to fight for a spot in next year's Paris Olympics, got their 2023 season off to an impressive start by reaching the quarter-finals of the Malaysia Open (Super 1000) last month.

Their next big assignment is the Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championships (BAMTC) in Dubai on Feb 14-19. This will be followed by the European leg of the World Tour which includes the All England (Super 1000) on Mar 14-19.

"I hope we can make an impact in Dubai, but we also have our seniors Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing in the team. If the coaches want us to play, we will be ready," added Chen.

Meanwhile, Mei Xing, who also played in the women's doubles final in Iran, had to settle for another silver after she and her partner, Goh Pei Kee, lost 20-22, 21-16 and 21-17 to Indonesia's Jesita Putri Miantoro-Febi Setianingrum.
