Hon Jian eyes 2028 Olympics with new partner

KUALA LUMPUR: Having switched several partners in the past, Choong Hon Jian wants his newly formed partnership with Goh Sze Fei to last for a long time.

Hon Jian, 23, was recently paired with Sze Fei following the latter's separation from his former partner, Nur Izzuddin Rumsani. Before the split, Sze Fei and Izzuddin had broken into the world's top 10 and were a prospect to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Hon Jian, who also plays mixed doubles with Go Pei Kee, said he hopes to reach the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics with Sze Fei.

"I am also not young, so yes, I hope to reach the 2028 Olympics with Sze Fei," Hon Jian told the press when met at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) today.

"Things are going well, and I'm still playing in two events. I hope these partnerships are somewhat permanent.

"Sze Fei and I have four tournaments next month. Let's see how we perform. Of course, no one wants to lose, and every player wants to be a champion. We just have to give our best," added the Penang-born Hon Jian.

Sze Fei-Hon Jian will first compete in the Thailand International Challenge on March 7-12, followed by the Super 100 China Masters (March 14-19), Vietnam IC (March 21-26), and the Osaka IC (March 29-April 2).

Following the separation, Izzuddin who mooted the split, was paired up with Haikal Nazri. They too will be playing in all four tournaments.

Left without many options, Haikal's former partner, Wan Arif Wan Junaidi chose to be paired with Yap Roy King.
