Tang Jie-Ee Wei shine, world champs Aaron-Wooi Yik fall at Swiss Open

KUALA LUMPUR: National mixed pair Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei are slowly but surely establishing themselves as one of the elites.

On Thursday, the world No 28 powered into the last eight of the Swiss Open when they ousted last week's All England semi-finalists and former world junior champions He Ji Ting-Du Yue of China 11-21, 21-14, 21-14.

Paired up only late last year, Tang Jie-Ee Wei will be bidding to reach their first World Tour-level semi-finals.

They were also the quarter-finalists of Malaysia Open and German Open two weeks ago.

While the youngsters excelled, men's doubles Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik were a let down once again despite being the top seeds.

The reigning world champions failed to exact revenge on Akira Koga-Taichi Saito, losing 17-21, 21-16, 21-17 to the Japanese pair, who sent them packing in the same stage in Germany.

Aaron-Wooi Yik are expected to be reprimanded by doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky following another dismal outing.

They were also eliminated in the opening hurdle of the All England.

Third seeds Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi survived a scare against Japanese qualifiers Kenya Mitsuhashi-Hiroki Okamura as they laboured to a 15-21 21-13, 21-15 win.
