June Wei, Kisona first-round casualties at Spain Masters

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's challenge in the Spain Masters is as good as over after independent shuttlers Cheam June Wei and S. Kisona become the latest casualties in their respective men and women's singles events.

World No 41 June Wei went down tamely 21-15, 21-13 to Indonesian rising star Christian Adinata to mark his third straight early exit in Europe.

June Wei had also exited the first round of the German Open and was eliminated by compatriot Ng Tze Yong during the second round of last week's Swiss Open.

June Wei will have one chance to redeem himself at the Orleans Masters in France next week.

Former Sea Games champion Kisona is still struggling to find her footing since turning professional early this year.

In her third start as an independent player, Kisona failed yet again to clear the opening hurdle when she lost 21-19, 16-21, 21-9 to India's Malvika Bansod.

Independent men's pair Boon Xin Yuan-Wong Tien Ci are the last Malaysians standing as they take on Japan's Kenya Mitsuhashi-Hiroki Okamura later today.

Xin Yuan-Tien Ci made it to the last 16 when they edged Lucas Corvee-Ronan Labar of France 20-22, 23-21, 21-19 in the first round.

They will be bidding to reach their first World Tour-level quarter-finals since their exploits at the Taiwan Open in July last year, which saw them finish as semi-finalists.
